4 Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

Tea is among the most liked and consumed drinks worldwide. Aside from being a wonderful, cheap beverage, devoid of calories, it has a blend of chemicals which confer several therapeutic benefits. Green tea originated from India and China, it has gained popularity for its health benefits for decades. Green tea is obtained from the un-oxidized leaves of the tea bush, therefore, it is the least processed type of tea. It has the highest amount of poly-phenols and antioxidants. It was used in ancient China and India to control bleeding and accelerate healing of wounds. The following are health benefits of drinking green tea;

1. Green tea has anticancer properties
Green tea contains poly-phenols, these have been proven to inhibit tumor growth in laboratory experiments. They can also protect against the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. Regions with a high rate of green tea consumption tend to have lowered cancer rates. The catechins found in green tea have been shown to prevent cell mutation and inhibit certain carcinogens.

2. Green tea reduces the risk of heart disease
Drinking green tea has been shown to reduce mortality from cardiovascular diseases. A study done in Japan found out that participants who took more than five cups of green tea daily had a considerably lowered risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than those who took less than one cup of green tea daily. Drinking up to ten cups of tea daily lowers cholesterol, however, drinking less than five cups has no effect.

3. Green tea promotes weight loss
Studies have indicated that green tea enhances weight loss considerably. It has been suggested that the catechins in green tea, induce a thermogenesis state of heat production in the body, this is thought to promote burning of calories. People who drink more than four cups of green tea daily have an incredibly higher rate of fat oxidation.

4. Green tea promotes oral health
Apart from the fluoride found in tea, the catechins and poly-phenols found in green tea have been shown to kill the bacteria associated with tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. Drinking two or more cups of green tea daily has been associated with a reduced risk of tooth loss. However, adding sweeteners like honey or sugar to the tea may nullify these benefits.
